Daily Asemic Lettering

2025

Hangeul letterforms devoid of phonetic value or semantic meaning.
This attempt to put typographic form apart from meaning starts from realizing the specificity of the position Graphic Designers hold as creators deeply engaged in the terrains of both visual and textual arts. As someone who has an interest in avant-garde literature of the likes of Yi Sang, and has practiced letterform design for a while, asemic lettering seemed like relatively uncharted ground, especially compared to practices of asemic writing, which have a more evident lineage. While asemic writing usually involves the act of handwriting(or markmaking), asemic lettering would be when the letterforms are literally designed rather than written.
This daily practice persisted for a bit longer than the duration of the Spring of 2025. I would letter a sentence or two per day, using the pen tool to shape single-stroke forms that are based on my sensual knowledge of brush calligraphy in Hangeul. The monolinear forms were adjusted as with any other lettering project(seeking visual balance, taking account of spaces in and out, etc.). Then width variations were applied to the stroke that gives the vector paths a brushstroke-resembling body. These letters are strongly independent of the assumed duty of a written language, considering clear form itself as the content it holds, and honest in form in that they do not formally shy away from the kinks of their digital process of making.
